Cyber Boxing

Did you know that on October 25th junior lightweight Bobby Tomasello died after his bout with Steve Dotse of Ghana?  He collapsed into a coma and never regained consciousness.  Did you know that WBC president Jose Suliman was re-elected to another four-year term by the Council's Board of Governor's?  Last time we talked about the craze that was roaring over the Internet for fantasy sports leagues.  Well, if you ever wanted to own a boxer or promote a fight your in luck.  Boxingame.com is a virtual fantasy boxing league that has rules, daily standings, purses, and everything that goes along with being in the sport of professional boxing.

They even have their own daily paper that will keep you up to date on all the current events that go along with this very controversial sport.  How does it all work you may ask?
This is a boxing simulation that is created over your computer.  You have the ability to create fighters in several different ways.  You have some input on the creation of your fighter, but most of his strengths, weaknesses and other characteristics are assigned to him.  You must pick names and weight classes and in turn begin to build your very own stable of fighters.  The challenge begins when you tell him how to fight each bout depending on the scouting report of his opponent, and his different strengths and weaknesses.  You must become a master at disguising his weaknesses and utilizing his strengths.

The program for the week is decided by weight class.  You must put out different fighters to be matched up against their peers.  Then your heavyweight will be fighting another heavyweight on his assigned night.  The boxing commission decides who will fight when, but you are given about five days to do you homework and scout your opponent.  You can check the site for the schedule, or you may want to be notified by email.  Then its up to you if you have your fighter chasing chickens for quickness or hitting the weights for strength.

After you submit a fight plan as manager then the fight will take place off-line.  You will either have the results emailed to you or you can just check the site.  The account of the fight is detailed and describes what happened blow-by-blow.  The scoring is explained in detail, and they take into account the fighters' abilities and the plan of attack that you submitted

So far there have been over 140,000 bouts, between more than 40,000 fighters, managed by 14,000 players.  Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rumble.  And as these bouts take place the managers are encouraged to role-play by issuing press releases.  All fighters will be ranked in their weight division and region.  The ultimate goal is to move through the ranks and become the "World Champion".

Let's go through a mock fight to give you an idea of how this stuff works.  Don Corleone to defend his title against Bruno "The Hitman" Tatlia.  Corleone picks up 3 points for the win, 1 point for a KO, 1 point for defending his title, and 1 point for fighting a top 10 contender, for a total of 6 points.  Tatalia loses 3 points for the loss and 1 point for the KO, but gains 1 point for fighting a champ, resulting in a total loss of 3 points.  So this will continue as your fighters try to become the next contender to be "The Champ".

Lace up those gloves, and go rent your favorite Rocky movie because this is an extremely fun and competitive game.  So let the best man win, and watch those low blows.
